You want one of the front-running events on London’s urban music scene? Well, look no further urbanites, for ILUVLIVE makes a welcome return to the capital for shenanigans a-plenty on the first Monday of every month. ILUVLIVE’s return follows a hugely successful 2007, playing five city residencies across Blighty’s dense, concrete jungle; all over a not so tee-total of four months. Acts included Plan B, Shola Ama, Ms Dynamite, Sway and Lady Sovereign. Quite something, I’m sure you’ll agree? And a suggestion of how and why ILUVLIVE has blossomed into the beautiful flower handpicked by urban scenesters today. To mark its fourth successive year, ILUVLIVE kick events off on February the 4th at Market Place, London, with a delectable array of artists set to perform. Singer-songwriter Lee Henry, winner of the 2004 Urban Music Awards, takes to the helm alongside such acts as K9, and the up-and-coming 16 year-old songstress Charlotte O’Conner. Big things are expected of the young lass who’s already turning heads in the music bigwig fraternity. The self-professed Drum Hitler, D-Boy feat Swiss & V Dubl E, will also be showcasing their talents alongside former open-mic winner Keleigh and The A’Jays. Ras Kwame and bringer of tastier beats than any purple veg found in Jamie Oliver’s garden, Twin B, make-up the list of confirmed artists alongside DJ Wonder on his wheels of steel. Oh, and of course no ILUVLIVE event would quite be complete without special guest appearances… As if proceedings weren’t sweet as a beet already, right? ILUVLIVE Monday 4th February Market Place, London, W1 8AH Tickets: Free (Before 8.30pm) £6 (OTD) £5 (Guestlist)

Men, stick-on your felt hats, and fasten your bombachas. Take a look at that stunner; swinging those hips in her full-length skirt and striped shawl; gyrating just like a wet and sexy Conger eel. Go to her, embrace her; for the Brazilian electro-folk maestro DJ Dolores is descending on London’s infamous Cargo nightclub, and just two weeks after Notion’s very own gut-busting launch of Stand And Point may I add - Arriba! For those that are unaware, DJ Dolores’ latest music was inspired by the sounds of Brasília Teimosa, one of Brazil’s poorest areas. The traditional folk, horns and beats of the region blew the well traveled DJ away, propelling him deep into the unique electro-Brazilian-folk he’s developing a reputation for. With blaring horns, the subtle shake of maracas and a dark political subtext, Dolores’s tracks are a proverbial melting-pot of Northeastern Brazilian music cast forward to the present with a coursing electro backdrop and the occasional rock or dub beat thrown in for good measure. Dolores’s latest material, taken from the forthcoming album ‘Real 1,’ will be showcased at Cargo and is the DJ’s contribution to the ‘Danger Global Warming’ project. The album itself features some excellent collaborations from the likes of Nordeste fusionists Silvério Pessoa and Marion, and Hugh Cornwell of The Stranglers. Yes indeed, Cargo is the place to be in February. On the 15th we, the good folk of Notion, present ‘Stand and Point,’ the first of our bi-monthly beat extravaganzas, and on the 27th Cargo present a smooth Brazilian - of the non-pubic variety. January you say? The New Year kicks off next month baby; hell yeah! DJ Dolores & full live band Wednesday 27th February Cargo, 83 Rivington Street, Kingsland Viaduct, Shoreditch London , EC2A 3AY Tickets: £12 (Advance) £14 www.cargo-london.com

Who needs pills when you’ve got the music of Shantel and the Bucovina Club Orkestar? Music that gives a subliminal sense of euphoria; where all inner demons, self-loathing and hate is tossed aside like a rotten banana, making way for a harmonious celebration of heavenly proportions. Yes indeed, Shantel et al will be hitting the mighty Koko next year, a date to put in one of the many diaries you may receive as a Crimbo prezzie: Wednesday 20th February. I’ve already put it in the one I bought for Uncle Bobby (lucky bugger getting two gifts rolled into one). With an eclectic mix of South-European and Balkan music, thrown into a melting pot of club-friendly electronica, this Koko gig is one party not to miss. In many ways Shantel is viewed as a pioneer of Balkan-electro, the first to cross over the threshold with such a sound and inspire DJs worldwide to embrace his euphoric ‘new’ sound. It’s a hybrid of Gypsy rhythm and Western music, R & B meets the Romanian beat of Dubstar Bugarskji. In a word: unique. Gogol Bordello anyone? It’s music that throws you into a completely different world - a galaxy alien to us all, yet only a plane ticket away. Disko Partiziani, Shantel and the Bucovina Club Orkestra’s last album witnessed Shantel’s talents as producer come DJ come musician brought forth like a stampede of hobos to a fag-butt. A particular album highlight is Sota, carried through with ska rhythms courtesy of Shantel’s guitar before erupting into a chorus that puts you smack-bang in the middle of a gypsy-campfire and subsequent debauchery. Then there’s Diskoboy, another treat one can expect at Koko; a tale that takes you to the realms of a seedy European club, trying diligently to get your hole or get your pole before the night is through. The terrific aspect of Shantel’s KOKO gig is that you’ll also be treated to a DJ set from the man himself, and there’s the promise of new material from the gypsy-electro maestros. Balls to it - I’m tempted to get buy family the doubly joyful gift of diary plus tickets for aforementioned date! February 20th: music, debauchery and unadulterated fun. Tick. Shantel and the Bucovina Club Orkestra Live Wednesday 20th February Koko, 1A Camden High Street, London , NW1 7JE Tel: 0870 1451115 Tickets: £16 Be Cabwise. STARTS 12 JULY: So much of summer is overrated, it almost makes me want to leave my Haviananas in the wardrobe and spend the season hiding in an industrial freezer unit in protest. Why must we drink Pimm’s when no-one really likes it? Also, putting ice in the glass still doesn’t make cider anything other than a yokel’s drink. Yet the prospect of all the musical outdoor events that start springing up is worth the investment in aftersun. Foremost amongst all of these events is The Somerset House Series, a fabulously debonair and delightful cycle of gigs by artists that may be varied to say the least but are still united by their quality. The setting itself is rather majestic, a Neoclassical courtyard of imposing proportions and the prospect of seeing The Roots, Amy Winehouse and other luminaries taking charge of the venue is an even tastier thought than a raspberry sorbet. It all kicks off on the glorious 12th with Mogwai performing in surround sound. I don’t know quite what that entails but we’d all be lying if we said we weren’t curious. The Roots on the 19th would have to be the hot ticket, but we recommend checking out folk patriarch Bert Jansch getting together with Beth Orton and Bernard Butler on the 14th for all your head becalming needs. JULY 12th - Mogwai 13th - Kasabian 14th - Bert Jansch with Beth Orton and Bernard Butler 15th - Guillemots 16th - Lily Allen 18th - Black Rebel Motorcycle Club 19th - The Roots 20th - Amy Winehouse 21st - Hot Chip All shows take place at Somerset House, The Strand, London.
