PLANETNOTION TELEVISION!

CAMERA-FOLK AND FILM EDITORS WANTED!

Planet Notion is looking for guys and dolls to film and edit features for its new TV channel, PNTV. Accompanying Notion to artist interviews, gigs, fashion shows, festivals and international events, you will be skilled, passionate and full of ideas about how to produce shit-hot video content. Camera-folk will be experienced and ideally have their own equipment, or at least access to equipment, while editors must be able to turn projects around quickly, and with stylistic flare. If you can both film and edit content, we would especially like to hear from you! These casual, unpaid positions would be ideal for those looking to develop their showreels, and to get the chance to travel, film major artists and top events.

Twisted Licks with Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong, 229, March 7th

If you cross a guitar lick with an electro bleep you end up with something akin to Twisted Licks. Yep, combining the best of both worlds, Twisted Licks is hitting new venue 229, bringing an eclectic mix of Indie and Electro. 229 shares the Twisted mentality of blending a live gig experience with a live club experience. I guess you could say they’re spreading peace and love, man - the whole “why don’t we all just get along” - John and Yoko mentality; which Planet Notion supports wholeheartedly. Anyway, unless you’ve had your head buried in the sand for the last year or so, you’d have heard of Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong. You haven’t? Then go lay an egg! Joe Lean and his merry men will be playing live and in your face; blending pleasant, catchy, and somewhat danceable pop with a little bit of Indie rock. The boys will be joined by The Alones, a fast-paced guitar laden three-piece from Stoke on Trent, whose new single ‘Silver’ is the first to be released on Another Music Another Kitchen’s new label. South-East London hipsters Christopher D Ashley will be injecting an electro buzz into proceedings with their distinct 80s sounding mixes. Think crimped hair, Pac Man and Flight of the Navigator and you’re some way there. Far from mocking the boys, this is a good thing, and apparently the 80s are undergoing a resurgence so ‘Hoorah’ for Christopher D Ashley! We salute you… Making up the party will be Twisted resident Slim Jim and Guy from Fierce Panda, for some good old fashioned DJ fun. Should you go to Twisted Licks? Madame Mim 'Global Beats Special', Guanabara, 13th March

Man, I love Brazil more than I love fish and chips. And I love Fish and Chips. But, obviously, I love Brazil more. It’s all that sexy Latino samba, the hot sun and sandy beaches, not to mention all those scantily-clad women at the Rio Carnival. And as for their music; man, it’s out of this world. Hence why the country’s scene is fast a-growing. Now London’s premiere Brazilian nightspot, Guanabara, is welcoming one of Sao Paulo’s hottest talents, Madame Mim. Rather than bringing plain old Latino beats to proceedings, Madame Mim spices things up with an eclectic mix of punk, electro and rock, all on a sexy Brazilian backbeat. She’s mighty good at somersaults, cartwheels and thrusts as well… Scandalous! Whilst playing guitar and singing, Madame Mim will be backed by guest-star Marcelo Vig on keyboards, groovebox, and ‘surprise’ instruments. Quite what these surprises might be remains to be seen, though everyone loves a surprise, so we won’t ponder too much on that minute detail. All you need to know is that Mim will be showcasing tunes from her new album ‘Electric Kool-Aid’, which in our eyes, is the best surprise one could wish for… Naturally the combined efforts of Mim and Vig create a whirlwind of orgasmic sounds, beats, and dance-floor-fillers which, in a 600 capacity venue, suits us to the ruddy ground. Furthermore, the ‘Hackney Globe Trotter’ Russ Jones will be bringing his mighty repertoire of global beats and world music to the Guanabara, a bonus if ever there was one. So, all in all, a night of Brazilian drum ‘n’ bass, baile funk, bhangraton, reggae, latin beat, samba and afro-funk goodness. Man, try saying that with a mouthful of lemon pie! Levi's OneToWatch with Land of Talk, February 25th at The Fly

My, my, my, Levi’s OneToWatch is back in London; Tonight! Last week saw Indie troubadours Cazals, Cut Off Your Hands, and Ox.Eagle.Lion.Man grace Camden’s Barfly, and now Levi’s are taking two more delectable acts to The Fly. Canadian three-piece ‘Land of Talk’ will be headlining the event. Lizzie Powell's high-octane, piercing rock vocals; blend lovingly with the heavy riffs, pounding drums, bass-driven grooves and gut-wrenching choruses of her bandmates. Canada seems to be a global haven of top talent at the moment, with a conveyor belt of bands being churned out and making waves on the Indie circuit. It’s rare, however, that you get a mixed batch trio as unique and original as Land Of Talk. South-Londoners ‘Friends of the Bride’ will be supporting. Libertines impresario Alan McGee described the band as “Current yet different; I could hear this in the top ten and wouldnae wince!” (He’s Scottish you see). Bulleit Bourbon Sessions at Maggie Mays, 10th April

Our cousins in Bonny Scotland aren’t all about kilts, haggis and ginger beards, oh no, they’re pretty famous for their whiskey too. Which brings us, oh so nicely, onto the Bulleit Bourbon® Sessions set to take place in Glasgow and Edinburgh; music delving back to its roots, from early Blues right through to a new crop of ‘Distorted Rock’ collectives. The first of the Bulleit Sessions is set to take attendees on a trip, and we’re not talking mind-altering substances here, hell no, we’re talking the magic of music man. The Glasgow gig on April 10th at Maggie Mays will take the audience on a magic carpet ride from electric blues, as pioneered by the likes of Clapton and Fleetwood Mac, right through to Hendrix inspired Psychedelic Rock. First up, US Electric Blues pioneer, Guitar Shorty, will be delivering his much-loved trad blues to the masses. With claims as an influence to Hendrix, as well as work with Ray Charles, BB King, and Little Richard to his name, Shorty is far from short on talent, regularly packing out clubs and festivals. Yeah, and he married Hendrix’s step-sister too… Fact 1. On the theme of Hendrix’s inspiration, we turn our head to a trio inspired by the great man himself: The Aliens… Fact 2. The Aliens were originally The Beta Band (Fact 3), an inspiration to the likes of Noel Gallagher and Radiohead. With psychedelic acid-drenched electronic and warped-rock incarnations, The Aliens bring that free-spirit - floating like a bird - effect of the past, pouring like sweet vino into the future. Completing the line-up will be Fence Records FOUND with their self-proclaimed ‘thought-provoking-music-you-can-move-to’. Which, to all young’uns out there, means music for jigging and jiving man. Oh, and if these acts aren’t enough for those North of t’border, punters can enjoy some smoky-smooth Bulleit Bourbon over ice, with cola or ginger ale. 'Living in a Disco' featuring Infadels at Passion, 8th March

March 8th marks the return of the biggest, baddest bi-monthly residency at Dalston’s tiniest, baddest discothèque. Yes, it’s ‘Living in a Disco’ (L.I.A.D) at Passion, home to the East-End’s smallest DJ booth, where all sense of intimacy in the ickle surroundings are thrown crashing out the window, when the pure lunacy of the L.I.A.D party gets a-kicking into action. Joining the usual foray of residents on March 8th will be some very, VERY Special guests: Wall of Sound records Infadels. Mixing up a myriad of rock, rave and psychedelic incarnations, Infadels are guaranteed to cause a ruddy riot with their live-sets, and they’re pretty damn special on the ‘ol decks to boot. Also making their way to the East-End will be the West-End’s Short Circuit DJs. They’ve been causing quite a stir at Neighbourhood, building up a following with their array of remixes and mastery of the decks. Resident’s Mr Lip and Dr AstroTurf will be showing the Short Circuit crew how the East-End throws a good ‘ol knees-up with their pummeled-pop, tattered-disco and electro mash-ups. Pendulum at Liverpool University, 2nd May

You either like ‘em or you don’t… I guess you could say it swings both ways. No pun intended. Yes, its Pendulum returning to Liverpool on the 2nd May, and one thing’s for sure they’re always guaranteed to pull in the crowds. Following a sell-out performance during the irrepressible Liverpool Music Week in December, the daddy’s of drum ‘n’ bass are bringing their savage live-sets crashing back, at Liverpool University. Where, you may ask, does Pendulum’s success lie? Well, savage live performances and dancefloor filling tunes for a start… Tis simple philosophy! If further proof of the lads success on the ‘ol drum ‘n’ bass’ circuit was needed try 100,000 copies of their debut album ‘Hold Your Colour’ and a worldwide tour. Comparisons with the Prodigy have been made by the music bigwigs, so if you haven’t already seen Pendulum, judge for yourself. 'Levi's OnesToWatch' featuring Cazals, February 19th at Camden Barfly

Ahhh, Levi’s® OnesToWatch®… The name says it all; this an event to keep an eye on. Kicking-off in style with their first bonanza of the year, Levi’s® are hoping to keep up the trend (no pun intended) with a host of dates throughout the country. Oh, and they look likely to succeed given their upcoming line-up at Camden’s Barfly; offering not one, Oh-no-no, but three bands to feast your eyes on. First up and bringing you that “oh so rare” combo of electro-mixes and spiky-guitar licks are Cazals. See, Cazals have the ability to appeal to mass-audiences; they’re a bunch of lads who haven’t allowed their boundaries to barricade them, cross-genre blending hard-pop to soft on a backbeat of electro sweetness. Having supported the likes of Babyshambles and Bloc Party, and signed to top French label Kitsune you just know it’s gonna be a good’n. Also on the bill are Cut Off Your Hands, a four-piece who’ve toured with the likes of We Are Scientists and Levi's® OnesToWatch darlings Foals. The lads are already making waves in the ‘ol surf capital of the world, taking Australia and NZ by storm, and its little surprise when you hear the ‘Beach Boys’ style backdrops on their fast-paced Indie grooves. Single ‘Oh Girl’ is released this month having been produced by the legendary Bernard Butler… Yes, he of Suede fame. Finally, offering support to the two headlining acts are Ox.Eagle.Lion.Man… (search me). Taking their lyrical influences from the likes of Nick Cave and Tom Waits, on a brooding, melodramatic build-up, this band are a little different and darker than the usual fare; but then that’s what makes such events so ruddy interesting. All-in-all an eclectic mix, lovingly spread by Levi’s® OnesToWatch® like cream cheese on a cracker… Oh, and what a cracker this one’s gonna be! Transient presents Tom Taylor, February 16th at The Horse and Groom

It’s that time of year again; when the old reflect on days of yonder, the lonesome wait (head in hands) for cupid’s interception, and the debauched yearn for high-times, music and merriment. Yes, you guessed it; it’s Valentine’s Day once more. Transient continue their love affair with monthly abode The Horse and Groom on February 16th and the small, intimate pub is fast-rising as a chip off the ‘ol Shoreditch block. Special guest for Transient’s Valentine spectacular will be DJ and producer Tom Taylor. For those unaware of his talents let’s fill in the gaps, for Mr. Taylor is quite a man when it comes to mashing-up and mixing any given track. As one half of 2020 Vision’s infamous electro synth-funk double-act, The Electric Press, zee man is quite zee DJ. Recent hit ‘Reevaluate’, coupled with some bad-boy remixes of Daft Punk, Armand, and the Buick Project (to name but a few), are but a dose of Taylor’s résumé. Throw in some sets at Leeds’ infamous Back to Basics, and a residency at London’s notorious DDD, and you go some way to understanding why Taylor’s appearance has heads a-turning; and why the little pub in Curtain Road is acquiring such a splendid rep. As well as the balance perfecto of Taylor’s techno, deep house and funk, resident DJs Ad Jones and Dan Kinasz will be getting intimate on the decks. Why Horse and Groom… are you trying to seduce me? 'Bollocks to Poverty on Tour' at The Borderline

Bollocks to Poverty returns to The Borderline of the nation’s capital on February 5th, sending out an S.O.S on global poverty and inequality via the medium of sound. Club nights, comedy shows, gigs; Bollocks to Poverty has dipped its hands in the proverbial melting pot of all entertainment; and they do it ruddy well to boot. This won’t be the first time the notorious event has taken place at The Borderline, having paid host to unsigned bands and up-and-comers in September. Such was the nights success, that an array of nomads plied the Bollocks crew with letter after letter, e-mail after e-mail, and call after recurring call, in the hope of garnering a-place on the hallowed bill of the next event. Of course, only a chosen few could make it… First-up we have The Krak, a three-piece clan with a difference; the difference being there’s no lead-singer. YEAH, I know, it’s ruddy mental! Bassist Ben, guitarist Tom, and… Claire, all have a crack on the ‘ol mic, drawing inspiration from their ménage-a-trois of influences, ranging from Bob Dylan to Cockney duo - and renowned Totten-ham fanatics - Chas and Dave. Bethnal Green four-piece The Toy Guns, whose music “sounds like The Police being repeatedly kicked by various members of The Clash and The Specials”, have fusions of rock, punk and ska in their repertoire. The band are looking pretty god-darn steamy, having won XFM’s Uploaded comp and putting pen to paper on a subsequent record deal. Promising, I’m sure you’ll agree? Next up, Parka are a band that need little introduction; they’re already making waves with their music and being lauded by the press as zee ‘next big thing’. The Indie lads, who hail from Glasgow-via-London, can proudly attribute themselves to a number-three single in the BBC Indie Chart. ‘Disco Dancer’ has received accolades from all corners with it’s catchy chorus; the kind that’ll see teetotallers up-and-down the country holding hands with the alky on their left, clasping a Nelson’s in their right, and bopping-forwards and backwards like a head-banging speed freak… Finally, rounding off Bollocks to Poverty will be London-based four-piece LR Rockets. With names such as Judge, Bomb, Pie and Face you’d think the boys were straight out of the Beano… But when they launch into their mish-mash of wired-punk and pop-rock they seem to fall into their own perfectly preserved and distinct category: Schizoid! One moment you’re a Kangaroo on an Acid trip, the next you’re Lionel Blair, tap-tap-tapping away to a punchy, joyful chorus. Quite frankly, LR Rockets are a rarity… Of course, Bollocks to Poverty will be giving all profits to Action Aid, but in exchange you get a glimpse into the future of the rock, punk and Indie scene… small price really.
